Independent support, modernization and migration services for organizations running OpenVMS on VAX, Alpha, Itanium and x86-64 — from day-to-day administration to a fully planned path off aging hardware.
Quadex supports OpenVMS the same way we support every other part of a client's stack: with a virtual team that spans time zones, and advice that puts your systems first. Aging hardware, disappearing spares and a shrinking pool of people who still know DCL are real risks for any organization still running VAX, Alpha or Itanium — our job is to help you manage that risk on a timeline and budget that make sense for you, whether that means stabilizing what you have, emulating it, or planning a full migration.
Whichever generation your systems are on, we can support what you have today and help you plan a path forward — including moving between platforms when the time is right.
The oldest generation (VAXserver, MicroVAX, VAX 4000–9000). Typical challenges: aging hardware, no spares, and no vendor support. We help with hardware-failure recovery, emulation options, and migration to Alpha, Itanium or x86-64.
AlphaServer and DEC 3000/4000/ES/GS series. We provide administration, performance tuning and ongoing support, plus emulation and migration guidance when it's time to move to Itanium or x86-64.
HPE Integrity servers (rx and BL series). We support upgrade planning, application recompilation, and migration to OpenVMS x86-64 as Itanium hardware reaches end of life.
The current OpenVMS platform from VSI, running on standard hypervisors. We support installation, application porting, performance tuning, and hybrid or cloud deployment planning.
| Platform | Era | Typical status | Recommended path |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAX | Earliest generation | Hardware at or past end of life | Stabilize, emulate, or migrate |
| Alpha | Second generation | Hardware aging, spares scarce | Support, emulate, or upgrade |
| Itanium / Integrity | Third generation | Hardware retirement underway | Plan migration to x86-64 |
| x86-64 | Current generation | Actively developed by VSI | Target platform for migration |
Exact OS versions and current vendor support status should always be confirmed against VSI's published information — happy to walk you through what applies to your environment.
From day-to-day administration to deep application work, our services are built around keeping your OpenVMS environment reliable while you decide what comes next.
Annual maintenance contracts and managed support with tiered response, proactive monitoring, and remote, on-site or hybrid delivery — a flexible, independent alternative to an expiring vendor support contract.
User and account management, queue management, SYSGEN/AUTOGEN tuning, patching and OS upgrades, storage and file-system management, and documentation.
OpenVMS Cluster design, build and troubleshooting, Volume Shadowing, failover and rolling upgrades, and multi-site disaster-tolerant cluster design.
Support and enhancement of legacy applications (COBOL, Fortran, BASIC, C/C++, MACRO-32 and more), bug fixing, recompilation across platforms, and web-enablement of existing applications.
TCP/IP stacks, DECnet, secure remote access, and troubleshooting for connectivity and login issues — including modernizing older, less secure protocols.
Backup strategy and media management, restore testing, disaster-recovery planning and drills, and data extraction and archival from systems being retired.
Security assessment and hardening, removal of insecure legacy services, access-control review, and support for the audit and compliance standards relevant to your industry.
Bottleneck analysis, memory and working-set tuning, batch-window optimization, and capacity forecasting for migrations and growth.
A written report covering your hardware, OS versions, licenses and applications — with risks, priorities and a recommended roadmap. The easiest way to start the conversation.
Book a Health Check →We lay out the real choices in plain language, including the ones that don't involve buying anything new.
When hardware is old, fragile or simply unobtainable, emulation lets you keep applications unchanged on modern servers — often with better performance, simpler backups, and a smaller data-center footprint than the original hardware.
Migration isn't all-or-nothing. We present it as a spectrum, and help you choose honestly — including recommending you stay put when that's genuinely the right call.
Our process: discovery and inventory → assessment and roadmap → pilot → migrate and test → parallel run → cutover and hypercare → post-migration support.
OpenVMS remains the backbone of operations across a range of industries where uptime and data integrity aren't negotiable:
We're not a hardware vendor and we're not trying to sell you a replacement platform. We're an independent team that happens to still know this stack well.

Yes. VSI (VMS Software, Inc.) continues to actively develop and support OpenVMS, including the current x86-64 release. Older VAX, Alpha and Itanium systems are generally outside mainstream vendor support, which is where independent specialists like Quadex come in.
In most cases, yes — through emulation, which lets you run the original application unchanged on current x86 servers, or through migration to a newer OpenVMS platform.
It depends entirely on the scope — a platform upgrade with no code changes looks very different from a full rewrite. A Health Check assessment is the fastest way to get a realistic timeline for your specific environment.
We work across several models — annual support contracts, retainers, time-and-materials, and fixed-price assessments — so you can pick what fits. Get in touch and we'll scope it against what you actually need.
